About the work
Competitive Plasticity was first created for Rambert’s Evening of New Choreography in 2015. It was later selected for the International Choreography Competition in Hanover in 2016, and for Resolution Festival at The Place in London, where it was performed by two dancers from Rambert School.
“Brain: Factory of dreams / Electrochemical stew / Never-ending buzz.”
The work started from an interest in the extraordinary activity of the human mind — generating thoughts, transmitting information, negotiating conscious and subconscious processes, while continuously adapting and reorganising itself.
In the choreography, this became a physical negotiation between two bodies. The dancers compete for space, interrupt and respond to one another, shifting between individuality, connection and opposition.
Competitive Plasticity was one of my earliest explorations of the relationship between the mind and the moving body — an interest that has continued to reappear in different forms throughout my work.
