About the work
Liminal was created within the Biennale College Danza 2022 programme in Venice, under the artistic direction of Wayne McGregor,
and premiered as part of the Biennale Danza International Festival.
It marked an important step in my choreographic practice: my first half-length work and the first time I created for a larger group of dancers.
The title comes from 'limen' — the Latin word for threshold — and describes a state of being between one condition and another.
The work investigated this state emotionally: a period in which familiar structures have disappeared, but nothing new has yet become stable enough to replace them.
Created in collaboration with visual artist Ben Kreukniet, musician JASSS and costume designer Dóra Hegedűs, the different elements of the work contributed to this shifting environment.
At the centre of the process were questions of attachment, belonging and endurance.
What keeps us moving when we find ourselves in a liminal period of life?
What can we attach ourselves to when there is no clear sense of stability?
Where do we belong while everything around us feels temporary?
The stage itself became a space of uncertainty.
Relationships formed and dissolved, structures appeared without becoming permanent,
and bodies negotiated what — or whom — they could rely on.
The choreography remained interested not only in entering this unstable territory, but in what happens while we inhabit it, and in the moment when the liminal state finally begins to disappear.
